Installing a video doorbell can provide both convenience and security for your home. However, during installation, you may run into a few head-scratchers while trying to follow the manufacturer’s instructions. In this guide, we’ll provide you with some general tips and tricks for installing an Xfinity doorbell based on the lessons we’ve learned.
Before we dive into the installation process, we recommend checking out our buying guide and exclusive ratings for video doorbells at cr.org to help you choose the best model for your home.
There are two types of video doorbells: hardwired and battery-powered. If you have a hardwired model, start by downloading the mobile app that connects your phone to the video doorbell. Most apps have installation guides and visuals to help you through the process.
Next, shut off the circuit breaker that powers your doorbell. This is important for safely handling the electrical wiring. If you’re uncomfortable working with electricity or wiring, we recommend hiring a professional for installation.
Inspect your doorbell’s transformer, which is usually near an electrical panel or inside a utility closet. This will ensure that it provides enough power to your video doorbell so that the camera can continuously record.
Next, inspect and rewire your doorbell chime if necessary. This can be tricky, but by combining our guide with your manufacturer’s instructions, you should be able to get through it just fine. Mechanical chimes have a small hammer that hits a metal bar whenever someone presses the doorbell, while digital chimes are essentially small speakers that play a tune. If you have a digital chime, you may need to install a special adapter on the wires that connect to the doorbell.
Afterward, remove your existing doorbell by unscrewing it from the exterior of your house and disconnecting the wires from the two terminals on the back of the doorbell. Then, drill pilot holes in the wood or holes for anchors if you have brick or stone and position the mounting brackets. Connect the wires to the two terminals and attach the doorbell to the bracket. Screw in any security screws.
Finally, turn the power back on, make sure the doorbell rings properly, and open the mobile app to connect the doorbell to your home’s Wi-Fi. At this point, you might be prompted to sign up for a cloud-based video storage service.
If you have a battery-powered model, make sure the battery is fully charged before you start. Attach the doorbell mounting bracket to the exterior of your home and insert the security screws that go into the bottom of the doorbell to prevent theft. Set up the doorbell app on your smartphone and connect the doorbell to your home’s Wi-Fi. Finally, plug in and set up the doorbell chime, connect it to your Wi-Fi, and pair it with your doorbell.
Remember to set up two-factor authentication to protect your account from being hacked. For more information and a full list of our video doorbell ratings, visit cr.org.
