If you are experiencing issues with your Nook Simple Touch, such as a weak battery, you may want to consider replacing the battery. This may seem like a daunting task, but it is actually quite simple and can be done at home with a few tools.
First, you will need to open the Nook. Contrary to what some may say, you do not need any special tools to do this. Simply use your thumbnail to get between the seam of the Nook and use your fingernail in the other direction to get underneath the lip of the Nook. Push to one side and lift up. The tabs are located on the side, so pull to one side before popping it off.
Next, you will need to remove the screw, which is located on the battery. You can use a regular flathead screwdriver, but make sure it is the right size to fit in the hole. Once the screw is removed, you can pull the back cover forward towards you and push the other direction. The receiver for the screw should bisect the circle to ensure that you have gone far enough. Open the Nook up like a book and pop the battery cable out.
Now comes the tricky part, which is removing the plastic. If the battery is no good, you can score the plastic down the middle and peel it away. Make sure not to damage the battery. After the plastic is removed, you can replace the old battery with a new one. Find the opening and make sure it is oriented correctly. Push the battery in and make sure it is seated properly.
To hold the battery in place, use a piece of packing tape. Get it about a quarter of an inch on one side and bring it over to the other. Flatten it down to hold the battery in place.
After the battery is secure, find the opening and twist it towards the direction you will be closing it. Place it back in its receptacle and make sure it is seated. Bisect the brass insert with the flat area just above the window and slide the Nook back into place. Use your torque driver to replace the screw and snap the back cover in place.
Replacing the battery in your Nook Simple Touch can seem intimidating, but it is actually quite simple. With these instructions and a few tools, you can replace the battery and have your Nook working like new again.
