How to Play X Plane 10: Setting up a Short Flight Plan and Approach in the Free Cessna 172

Welcome to this X Plane 10 tutorial! Today, we will be looking at how to set up a short flight plan and approach in the free Cessna 172. Let’s get started!

First, we need to access the flight plan page. To do this, tap to activate the cursor and use two fingers to move it to the next empty line in the flight plan. Then, drag one finger to turn the knob to start entering the letters of the next waypoint. In our example, the next waypoint will be our destination airport, pH Mk. Once we get three of the letters for our airport in the GPS, it autocompletes for us, and we can accept this by tapping enter twice. Now, our flight plan is set up direct to pH Mk.

Next, let’s set up our instrument departure procedure from pH. Select pH and L, and then tap the procedures button. Move the cursor down to select departure and tap enter to access the list of all the possible departure procedures. Let’s go with Palais to, since we are on runway zero eight left and mkk is at Molokai, which is where we want to end up. Hit enter again to see that all the individual waypoints have been added into our flight plan.

Now, let’s pick an approach. Select our destination airport, pH MK, and tap the procedures button again. This time, we’ll select approach. We will select the vor alpha into mkk and load it. Now, our chosen approach procedure is displayed in our active flight plan page immediately after our destination airport.

Remember to tap the nav/GPS source selector and put it into GPS mode. This will slave the CDI to the active leg on the g5 30 so you can monitor your course. Don’t forget to switch it back to nav when you begin the vor approach into pH mk2. Use the actual vor guide for guidance, or you’ll fail your check ride.

Finally, don’t forget that you can also find full manuals for both the g5 30 and g4 30 on the explained.com manuals page. These manuals include full details on all the features in the GPS’s and a walkthrough on programming a flight plan.

Thank you for reading, and we hope this tutorial was helpful for you in learning how to play X Plane 10!
