If you are upgrading to a new computer and want to transfer your Thunderbird email account, it can be a little daunting. However, it is quite simple if you have the right tools and follow the right steps. Here is an easy-to-follow guide on how to move Thunderbird from one computer to another.
Before you begin, ensure that you are using the latest version of Thunderbird. To check, go to the About Thunderbird section. If there are any updates available, it should tell you there. The guide is based on Thunderbird version 102.3, but it should work on versions 100 and newer.
To transfer your Thunderbird account, you will need a key pen drive of 16GB or more. Follow the steps below:
1. Open Thunderbird on your old computer.
2. Go to Tools > Export. If you have many emails, you may need to split them into smaller files because of the 2GB limit.
3. Open your Thunderbird profile folder. Right-click on the folder you want to copy and select Copy. Then, right-click on your key pen drive and select Paste. Wait for the folder to be copied across.
4. Eject the key pen drive from your old computer and plug it into your new one.
5. Open Thunderbird on your new computer.
6. Go to Tools > Export > Open profile folder.
7. Close the tab and quit Thunderbird.
8. Copy the folder you just copied from your old computer and paste it into your new computer’s profile folder.
9. Wait for the folder to be copied across.
10. Double-click on the new profile folder, press Command+A to select everything, Command+C to copy, go back up a level, double-click on the default folder, then Command+V to paste.
11. Replace everything and minimize the folder.
12. Load up Thunderbird, go to Tools > Import from another Thunderbird installation.
13. Press Continue and select “Import from profile default”.
14. Press Continue and make sure everything is selected before pressing Continue again.
15. Start the import process. This may take a few minutes.
16. Once Thunderbird has restarted, you will need to re-enter your email passwords.
17. Delete the profile you brought from the key pen to make it easier in the future.
That’s it! Your Thunderbird account has now been transferred to your new computer, and you can enjoy all your emails, contacts, and settings.
