How to Stop Emails Opening with One Click in Outlook

If you work on a team that uses shared Outlook mailboxes, you may have experienced the frustration of overlooking an important email that was marked as read. This can happen when someone clicks on an email to preview it, but as soon as they click away, the email is no longer highlighted as being unread. This can cause confusion and lead to neglected emails.

However, there is a simple solution to prevent this headache from ever occurring in Outlook. Here’s what you need to do:

1. Click on the View tab in Outlook.

2. Click on the Reading Pane dropdown.

3. Next, click Options.

4. Uncheck the “Mark item as read when selection changes” option.

5. Click OK.

Now, when you click on an email to preview it and click away, the email will remain unread. When you do want an email to be marked as read, simply double-click on it to open it up, and then it will be marked as read.

Make sure to share these steps with the other members of your team so that they can also uncheck the “Mark item as read when selection changes” option on their PCs. This will save you all tons of frustrating moments in the future.

By following these simple steps, you can ensure that important emails are not overlooked or neglected. Don’t forget to share this tip with your team and save yourselves from future headaches!
