How to Stop Downloading WebP Files: A Quick Guide

Have you ever downloaded an image from the internet, only to find that it’s not saved in the typical JPEG or PNG format? If you’re using Microsoft Photos or a similar app, you may have noticed that some files seem to disappear or get skipped over. This is because they’re saved in a WebP format, which is a type of compression method developed by Google.

While WebP files are more efficient than traditional PNGs, they can be a hassle if you’re not familiar with how to work with them. In this quick tutorial, we’ll show you how to change the file type of a WebP image to JPEG or PNG, so you can easily save and access your files.

First, find an image you want to save, and open it in a new tab. On some websites, this will eliminate the preview file and show the image in a larger size. In this example, we’re using a Reddit post.

When you go to save the image, you’ll notice that it’s being saved as a WebP file. This can cause issues if you’re using certain apps, so it’s best to change the file type. To do this, simply change the file extension from “.webp” to “.jpg” or “.png”. Make sure to delete everything after the period, but don’t remove the period itself. This will ensure that the file remains intact and doesn’t get corrupted.

Once you’ve changed the file type, save the image to your desktop or another folder. You can then open the image in the app of your choice, such as Microsoft Photos. When you right-click the image and go to Properties, you should see that the type of file is now a JPEG or PNG.

And that’s it! With this simple trick, you can easily save and access WebP images without any issues. Whether you’re a PC enthusiast or just someone who enjoys browsing the internet, knowing how to work with different file types can be a valuable skill.
