If you are looking to use Gmail on Microsoft Outlook 2013, this guide will walk you through the steps to set it up in manual mode. Enabling IMAP or POP in your Gmail account settings is the first step. Note that Google prefers IMAP; therefore, this guide will be using IMAP. If you are unsure of these terms, you can refer to one of the creator’s previous videos.
To enable IMAP, sign into your Gmail account, click on the gear icon in the top right corner, select Settings, and then click on Forwarding and POP/IMAP. From there, select “Enable IMAP by default” and save your changes.
Now that the configurations in Gmail are complete, it is time to set up Outlook on your computer. Open Outlook and click on the “File” tab on the account information screen. Select “Add Account” and choose “Manual Setup or Additional Server Settings.”
Next, select the type of account (POP or IMAP) and enter your name and Gmail address. For account type, select IMAP, and for the incoming mail server, enter imap.gmail.com. For the outgoing mail server, enter smtp.gmail.com.
Now, enter your Gmail ID and password. Click on “More Settings” and on the “Outgoing Server” tab, select “My outgoing server requires authentication” and leave the next option as “use the same settings as my incoming mail server.”
Go to the “Advanced” tab and change the IMAP port to 993 and the type of encrypted connection to SSL. Then, change the outgoing server port to 465 and change the type of connection to SSL. If you face issues while sending emails, change the outgoing port of 587 with TLS instead of 465 with SSL.
Note that you need to select the type of encrypted connection first before entering the port number; otherwise, the port number will revert to port 25. Once you have completed the above steps, test the account settings by logging into the incoming mail server and sending a test email.
When you see a message saying “You are all set,” the configuration is completed. Your Gmail address will display in the account list on the left with any other email addresses you have added to Outlook. You can now click the inbox to see what’s in your Gmail inbox and other folders.
