If you have a Windows system image backup in a VHD or VHDX file format, you can easily mount it as a virtual hard disk without any additional software. In this guide, we’ll show you how to do it using the built-in Computer Management tool in Windows.
To begin, go to your Start menu and search for “Computer Management.” Run it as an administrator and click on the “Storage” category in the sidebar. Then, click on “Disk Management” from the list of options.
You’ll see a list of all your partitions. Click on a blank space in the box, then click on “Action” and select “Attach VHD” from the drop-down menu. Click on “Browse” and locate the virtual hard disk image you want to mount. Double-click on it, then click on “OK” and wait for the disk to be mounted.
Once the disk is mounted, you’ll need to assign it a drive letter. Right-click on the virtual hard drive image and select “Change Drive Letter and Paths” from the menu. Click on “Add” and choose a drive letter that is not already in use. Click on “OK” and then “OK” again.
If you open up File Explorer, you should now see the mounted drive letter. Going into the virtual drive, everything should work as expected. To remove the virtual drive, simply eject it as if it was a flash drive or external hard drive, then refresh the list.
Although it may not be as simple as opening it in File Explorer, mounting a VHD or VHDX file in Windows is easy once you know how to do it. And it can be a lifesaver if you need to access files or settings from an old system image backup.
