If you’re looking to install a fresh copy of Windows 10 onto your Surface Pro 4, you’ll need to know how to boot it from a USB device. While the steps are a little different from older models, it’s a relatively simple process. In this guide, we’ll walk you through the steps to boot your Surface Pro 4 from a USB device.
First, ensure that your USB device is formatted as FAT32. If it’s formatted as NTFS, your Surface Pro 4 won’t recognize it. Next, shut down your Surface if it isn’t already off. Plug your bootable USB media into the USB port on the right-hand side of the Surface.
While the Surface is off, hold down the Volume-Up button (the one with the “+” icon on the top). While still holding the volume-up button, press the power button once and let go of the power button, but do not let go of the volume-up button just yet.
The screen should show the “Surface” text. Keep holding the volume-up button until you see the Surface UEFI screen as shown. From the menu on the left, select Boot Configuration. To change the order, simply select USB Storage and drag it to the top so that it has the highest priority. Once complete, select Exit from the left.
The Surface will note that all changes have been saved, so click the Restart Now button. The Surface should now boot from the attached USB device. In our case, it successfully started up the Windows 10 installation process as expected.
And that’s all there is to it – you should now be able to boot from USB media with your Surface Pro 4. No need to watch a video, just follow these simple steps.
