Reddit can be an excellent source of information and entertainment, but sometimes it’s not the most pleasant site to browse. If you’re tired of seeing posts from certain subreddits, you’ll be happy to know that it’s possible to block them. Here’s how.
First, let’s start with the free method. If you don’t want to pay for a Reddit Premium subscription, you can use a website-blocking extension to block subreddits. One of the best extensions for this purpose is BlockSite. You can find the link to it in the description below.
Once you’ve added the extension to your browser, you’ll need to configure its settings. Click the puzzle piece next to the address bar, find the BlockSite extension on the list, and select “options.” Here, you can set how the extension works. The most important thing to do is to set a master password. This will prevent others from unblocking sites without your permission.
To block a subreddit using the extension, go to the subreddit you want to block and click the BlockSite icon near the address bar. You’ll be prompted to enter your password. Once you’ve done that, a pop-up will ask you to confirm that you want to block the site. Edit the URLs listed so that only the subreddit’s URL is blocked. For example, if you want to block the politics subreddit, make sure you have reddit.com/r/politics blocked. Click “OK” to proceed. The site will immediately redirect to a restricted access page.
To unblock the site temporarily, enter your password and tap the enter key. By default, the extension unblocks the site for a minute, but you can change this in the options page. To re-block the site, restart your browser.
If you want to remove the blocking entirely, enter your password and click “remove blocking.” Note that you may still see posts from the subreddit on pages like r/all and r/popular.
To filter content from subreddits on r/all, you can use Reddit’s old website. Click the second link in the description below to go to r/all on old Reddit. Here, you can filter subreddits by name. Your preferences will carry over to Reddit’s new interface as well.
Keep in mind that you may still see posts from unwanted subreddits on r/popular and the Reddit mobile app. The only way to block subreddits on these platforms is to either block them individually or pay for Reddit Premium.
