If you’ve ever used your camera equipment outside in humid or rainy environments, you know how difficult it is to keep it in top-notch condition. The good news is that there’s a cheap and easy solution. Jake, a content creator on YouTube, shares his tips on how to store camera equipment in humid environments.
Jake suggests using a plastic box, like Tupperware, to keep your equipment dry. When working with non-weather-sealed lenses, it’s essential to prevent moisture from seeping inside. Mold and fungus can grow on the inside of the lens, causing damage that may be difficult to repair.
While you could invest hundreds of dollars in a dehumidification cabinet, a plastic box and silica gel packets are a much cheaper alternative. Place the silica gel packets inside the box, and they will absorb any moisture that gets inside. When they turn from orange to clear, it’s time to recharge them. Place them in the oven at 300 degrees Fahrenheit for three to four hours, and they will turn orange and ready for use again.
Before sealing the box, generate a little heat to warm things up and get the moisture off. You can use a loom cube or a low-wattage light bulb to do this. But, be careful not to set anything on fire. Finally, use a USB fan to circulate the air inside the cabinet, which will help move the moisture past the silica gel packets.
Seal the box and let it sit overnight, or a few days, depending on how wet things are. Once you open it up, your equipment will be in excellent working condition. Jake has been using this method for a few years and has successfully rescued a loom cube that wasn’t sealed all the way.
In conclusion, storing your camera gear in a humid environment can be a challenge, but it doesn’t have to be. With a cheap plastic box, silica gel packets, and a few simple tricks, you can keep your equipment working correctly.
