Have you ever wanted to create shortcut icons on your desktop straight from Google Chrome? If so, stick around because I’m going to show you how to do just that.
First, you’ll need to open up Google Chrome and open up different tabs for all of the websites that you want to create a desktop shortcut for. Once you have them open, click on the tab first that you want to create your first icon on. On the top right-hand side, click on the three dots, come on down, and hover over “more tools.” From here, you should see an option that says “create shortcut.” If this is grayed out for any reason, chances are you’re either using a guest account or you haven’t signed into Google Chrome with a Google Chrome account. You’ll need to do that in order to activate this feature.
Once you’ve signed in, this should re-highlight, and you should be able to create a shortcut icon. Left-click on “create shortcut,” and you can see it’s going to say “create shortcut.” It’s going to adopt whatever the website icon is, and it’s going to name it Facebook or whatever the default is. You can name this to whatever you’d like, so you will just say “custom Facebook” here. Once you’ve got that, you can choose to open it as a window, so every time you open up this icon, it’s going to open up its window. For now, we’re just going to leave that unchecked and click on “create.”
To do it for the second one, click on the tab, and follow the same process. Adopt the YouTube icon, name it YouTube, and leave the “open as a window” option unchecked. Then click on “create.”
If we minimize the window here, you should be able to see that it’s going to be on your desktop, and it’s going to show them just like this. It’s going to show whatever you rename them to. This is a straightforward and useful process for keeping your icons organized.
It’s essential to note that this only works within Google Chrome. Even the new Microsoft Edge, even though it is built on the Chromium platform, does not yet feature this feature. We don’t have any information on if it is coming at all.
Creating shortcut icons on your desktop from Google Chrome is a simple and easy-to-do process. It works really well for keeping your icons organized. So, give it a try and let us know if you have any questions.
