How to Hibernate Mac: A Step-by-Step Guide

In this blog post, we’ll discuss how to put your MacBook in hibernate state. Hibernation is a state of the computer where your RAM is not powered and all the information in your RAM is stored on your SSD. When you start the computer again, the information is returned back.

If you don’t want to hibernate, when shutting down, you can click the check box “reopen windows when logging back in”. This is an alternative to hibernation when you’re shutting down. Similarly, when you’re logging off, this option is still available. This is also an option if you just want to restore your space, whatever windows you had open, and everything back to the previous state.

If this does not work for you and you want to go for a hibernation state, then there are some commands you need to run on your computer. This is where we’ll talk about them.

The first thing you need to do is run the command “sudo pm set -g”. This will show you your power management settings, what are the current settings, and the first time it will ask for the password. This shows your settings.

This is an hibernation file which is created in hibernate mode and hibernate mode is by default three modes. We need to change this hibernate mode 3 to 25 so how do we do that? We go again pm set and for all we and do the hibernate mode and we change it to 25. When we do this, we can check again that this has been set to 25 and this is a file we can also check.

The sleep image of our RAM is saved when you put it on sleep. This will actually go into hibernate state when the hibernate mode is set to 25. It will not go to sleep mode, it will go into hibernate mode so the power to the RAM would be shut down and the image will be saved in the hard disk. But when you put it back into the mode 3, hibernate mode is disabled and it will go into sleep mode and your RAM is actually powered and information is stored in the RAM.

There is also an option called standby. If you have this option standby mode, then this mode is enabled and that means that after a specific time, the image is stored in the sleep image itself and RAM is powered down as well. For that, we see the standby delay. Standby delay is the amount of time after which the RAM is shut down and sleep image is created and when you start your Mac again, the sleep image is read and put it in the RAM.

To put your system in the hibernation mode, you need to set this mode to 25. To put it back in the default mode, you need to put it in the three modes. That’s it, guys. That is the only change required.

In conclusion, hibernation is a great way to save battery life and restore your system quickly. We hope this guide helps you hibernate your Mac.
