How to Cut and Transpose Cells in Excel

Excel is a powerful tool for organizing data, but sometimes you need to rearrange entries in your worksheets. In this post, we’ll walk you through two quick tips to help you cut and transpose cells in Excel.

Let’s start with cutting and swapping cells. If you have a list of entries and you want to swap the positions of two cells, you can do this easily in Excel. Simply select the cells you want to move and cut them. You can do this from the Home tab on the ribbon, with a right-click and cut, or with the keyboard shortcut of ctrl X.

Then, select the cell where you want to move the cut cells and insert them. Make sure you click the bottom half of the insert menu, not the top button. This will bring up the insert cut cells option, which will swap the position of the cells beautifully.

On a Mac, the process is the same: select the cells, edit cut, select the destination, and insert cut cells.

Now, let’s cover transposing cells. If you have a list of entries in a horizontal row or a vertical column and you want to transpose them to the opposite orientation, you can do this easily with Excel’s copy and transpose command.

First, select the entries you want to transpose and copy them (don’t use cut). Then, select the cell where you want to paste the first transposed entry and use the paste transpose command, which you can find on the Home tab of the ribbon.

On the PC, the process is the same: select the cells, click copy from the Home tab, select the destination starting cell, and click the paste button. Make sure you click the bottom half of the paste menu to access the transpose option.
