After much anticipation, Apple has finally revealed its Bluetooth tracking device, the AirTag. These small button-shaped pucks can be attached to your keys, wallet, backpack, and other items and tracked through the Find My app. But how much will they cost, and how do they work?
AirTags will go up for pre-order on April 23rd, starting at $29 for one or $99 for a four-pack. However, you’ll need additional accessories to attach them to your items, and Apple offers a range of keychain attachments that go from $30 to a whopping $450 for an Hermès keychain. For those on a budget, the Belkin option for $12.95 is a more reasonable choice.
The AirTag is designed with a glossy white plastic front that can be customized with an engraving, and a silver stainless steel backing. It’s powered by a CR2032 battery that you can replace yourself. Without additional accessories, the AirTag is useless, so you’ll need to attach them to your belongings to keep track of them.
One of the most exciting features of AirTags is precision finding, which uses ultra-wideband technology to guide you directly to your lost item. When you’re within 30 feet of the AirTag, your iPhone will guide you to it down to a couple of feet. There’s also haptic feedback to let you know when you’re getting closer.
The AirTag’s tracking capabilities are enhanced by the existing ecosystem of Apple products. When your AirTag comes into contact with a nearby iPhone via Bluetooth, those iPhones will communicate with the AirTag and help update its location as it moves. If someone finds a lost AirTag, they can scan it with their smartphone to bring up contact information for the owner.
Apple has reassured users that they take privacy seriously, and there are measures in place to prevent unwanted tracking. If an AirTag is slipped into your bag or car without your knowledge, your iPhone will pick up on it and notify you.
AirTags offer a convenient solution for keeping track of your belongings, but the additional costs of accessories could add up. Nevertheless, for those prone to losing their keys or wallet, an AirTag could be a worthwhile investment.
